Allergens
It is a requirement of all food businesses, including bakeries, to notify customers if any of the food which they serve or provide, contain any of the listed allergens as an ingredient. Although consumers may be allergic or have intolerances to other ingredients, there are 14 main allergens which are required to be declared as allergens, by food law, in the UK.
The 14 allergens are: celery, cereals containing gluten (such as wheat, barley and oats), crustaceans (such as prawns, crabs and lobsters), eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs (such asmussels and oysters), mustard, peanuts, seasame, soybeans, sulphur dioxide and sulphites (if the sulphur dioxide and sulphites are at a concentration of more than ten parts per million) and tree nuts (such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, pistachios and macadamia nuts).
This also applies to additives, processing aids and any other substances which are present in the final product.
Our Products
Unless otherwise specified all cakes which leave our kitchen contain dairy, gluten (wheat) and eggs, and are made in an environment which regularly handles nuts and soya as well as other allergens.
Our kitchen is not an allergy-free kitchen, and so The Couple That Bakes do not provide allergy-friendly cakes, as we cannot guarantee that they will not contain trace amounts of these ingredients, due to the nature of production, in a small kitchen environment.
The Ordering Process
To place an order with The Couple That Bakes, this must be done either through the website online, or from messaging via social media, or email. We do not handle orders via phone call, or have customers walk in and place orders. Due to the nature of our business, everything is prebooked in advance. It is the customers responsibility to make The Couple That Bakes aware of any allergies or requirements which they may need to know about in advance.
Allergen information is displayed on all of The Couple That Bakes social media platforms, including the website. Allergen information can be found in our Instagram highlights, our pinned post on Facebook, in our Facebook and Instagram captions and in our product descriptions on our website.
Contamination After Collection or Delivery
The Couple That Bakes cannot accept responsibility for any cross-contamination following delivery.
This may occur our cakes come into direct contact with food products containing wheat/gluten, eggs, dairy; if they are handled with utensils or placed on surfaces previously used for food containing avoided ingredients without adequate cleaning. We do not accept liability for any cross-contamination which may occur, after the cake has been collected or delivered to a customers home, or party venue.
Prepacked
Prepacked products refer to any food put into packaging before being placed on sale. Food is prepacked when it:
- is either fully or partly enclosed by the packaging
- cannot be altered without opening or changing the packaging
- is ready for sale.
Prepacked food must have an ingredients list present on the packaging. Allergens present in the product must be emphasised each time they appear in the ingredients list in bold text.
How allergens are displayed on The Couple That Bakes products:
Pre-packaged items such as Sugar Cookies, are packaged in a cellophane bag, sealed or tied with a ribbon and include a full ingredients list on the back, adhering to Natasha's Law.
On orders such as cupcakes, or celebration cakes, tick box allergen labels are used which allow the flexibility to tick boxes of the allergens which are included in the cake. These labels work well for our cupcake and cake orders as they vary per flavour, design, whether food colouring or sprinkles have been used etc. This allows the flexibility to add or remove specific ingredients.
